The importance of biotechnology and biotechnology-based methods in medical therapies and diagnostics as well as in the discovery, development, and manufacture of pharmaceuticals is undeniable. Moreover, biotechnologically manufactured pharmaceuticals form a significant amount of the total pharmaceutical market at the moment. So, the School of Pharmacy, as the pioneer center in establishing the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, welcomes talented and self-motivated individuals who are interested in this field.
Pharmaceutical biotechnology is a new and upcoming field which includes the principles of biotechnology that are applied to the development of drugs. A plethora of therapeutic drugs in the current market are bioformulations, such as antibodies, nucleic acid products and vaccines. Such bioformulations are developed via several stages that include: understanding the principles underlying health and disease, the fundamental molecular mechanisms governing the function of related biomolecules, synthesis and purification of the molecules, determining the product shelf life, stability, toxicity and immunogenicity, drug delivery systems, patenting and clinical trials.
The department of pharmaceutical chemistry is involved in taking lectures in the subjects of general chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmaceutical / medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical analysis for the undergraduate students in the two year D. Pharm course.
The department is involved in teaching pharmaceutical analysis to the undergraduates. The curriculum includes extensive lectures and laboratory sessions to ensure that students can connect theory to practice and apply their theoretical knowledge gained. The field of pharmaceutical analysis is very dynamic and the curriculum ensures that the students are kept abreast with the latest development in this field. They are taught classical and modern analytical techniques including the application of sophisticated instruments like GC, HPLC, NMR, GC-MS, LC-MS etc. for drugs, pharmaceuticals and others.
The faculty members of this department are deep-rooted in synthetic, analytical, material chemistry, computational and biochemistry. The department is flourished from this base and currently represents world-class knowledge in structure prediction, analysis and interpretation, synthetic and chemical biology.
Pharmacology as a science is a growing area of pharmaceutical discipline. Scientific communities have witnessed the success of pharmacologically derived therapies in combating the devastating diseases of mankind. The pharmacological research has provided the miraculous cure for the variety of clinical conditions and improved the quality of human life. Therefore, the persons qualified in pharmacology are needed to maintain and advance the pharmaceutical education and research. The department of pharmacology strives to combine the biological, pharmaceutical and medical disciplines to achieve the research and education goal that is hard to accomplish independently
The Department of pharmacology is involved in research and academic activities. The subjects in Pharmacology introduce students to the unified study of the interaction of chemical agents and living matter. The emphasis is placed on the principles of drug action and on the reactions of living processes to drugs. Toxicology, a division of Pharmacology, is concerned with the adverse effects on life of therapeutic drugs and other chemicals. Toxicology is of increasing relevance to modern society.
The Department of Pharmacognosy carries out research in pharmaceutical sciences focused on natural products from medicinal plants and microorganisms. Major tasks are the discovery of new biologically active compounds from natural sources and the characterization of their molecular mode of action contributing to a better understanding of the interaction of natural products and complex cellular systems.
The department is engaged in undergraduate teaching and has a well equipped laboratory and medicinal garden. The garden set up in 2005, is well maintained with the help of a horticulturist. Presently the garden houses around 40 well labeled plants that have value in the field of medicine and cosmetics.
